Richard
Erdman
Sculptor
Erdman produces sculptures
designed to connect with us viscerally, somatically,
to stop us in our tracks not simply to admire
them or stroke them but to sense them and empathize
with their movement as much as their presence.
He speaks constantly of the viscerality he seeks,
a viscerality he sees as inherent to the very
purpose of sculpture, “which,
being closest to our world in physical relationships,
is often judged by us in relative human standards.” Erdman
continues, “If a sculpture does not work
on the gut or emotive side of our experience with
it, it will not work at all. It should strike one
first on a visceral level, where intellect is rooted
in emotion, and emotions are not structured by
intellect.”
Once we’re reached, and
pulled in to his world, we ride with Erdman into
the realm of the sensate. “That’s
the essence of my work,” Erdman continues, “what’s
between the line, not in the curve, but maybe in
the effervescence that comes from those forms…”
